Eulogy

EULOGY – AN APPRECIATION FOR THE LIFE OF

NIGEL WINGROVE PRESCOTT

NIGEL WINGROVE PRESCOTT was born on the 19th of December 1965 to Angelina and William Prescott.  He was the baby of the family with an older brother, William and a sister, Andrea before him.

“Pressie”, “Plaid Pants Pressie”, “Scut”, “Nun” as he was called at school was a very active child, growing up and like all boys played his fair share of tricks, especially on his sister.

He was educated at St. Luke’s, St. Paul’s and New Pine (now Wilkie Cumberbatch) primary schools and at The University of Waterford also referred to as the Combermere School.

Pressie was an avid athlete and‘d’ boy was fast.  He will long be remembered for having slipped in a 100m race on the Harrison College playing field, getting back up and ‘flying’ pass the other athletes to win the race.  His passion for athletics continued throughout his life as he was also an avid bodybuilder, trying to step in his big brother shoes.  And man, he used to walk fast, hardly anyone can remember seeing Pressie strolling!! (Well, unless he was with a girl, as he was a gentleman).

He excelled at cadets at Cawmere; he was a member of the Cadet band and played the cornet.  Pressie, along with his buddies; Derek ‘Bandy’ Clarke, Jeffery ‘Sodabix’ Forde, and Carlisle “Felix, Bunta’ Felicien formed the ‘Cornet Quartet’. They would play at weddings and funerals all over the island.  These guys remained lifelong pals.

Pressie reached the rank of Sergeant Major, and for those who don’t know about the military …this rank carries a lot of responsibility, since this individual is not only responsible for keeping the esprit d’ corps high in the unit but was also charged to maintain the high standard of discipline within the company.  Nigel did very well in this post; though no-nonsense he still had a funny side to him which made him approachable even if you were timid at first.  He had a smile that could disarm anyone.  He was very well respected and admired by cadets around Barbados during his tenure.

After leaving school, Nigel was invited by the late Colonel Quintyne to be a founding member of the BDF band.  He was joined by other members of the school band at the time, such as Bandy Clarke, Gerry Moore, Peter Wiggins, and Paul Wiggins to name a few.  On leaving the band he joined the Coast Guard Reserves where he served for a short time.

Pressie had some tough breaks in his life; he finished school in 5th form after doing his exams since his financial situation prevented him from going onto sixth form or even BCC.

He started his working life soon after leaving school working for a short time at a Bridgetown firm as well as Intel Corporation. When Intel closed he joined the then Barbados Mutual where he spent most of his working life.  There he gained the nickname ‘Reboot’ because that was the first thing he would go around and tell everyone to do before he would fix the computers.  And he would do so in his inimitable ‘speedy Gonzalez’ way.  There was even a play written by a member of staff of the company in which Nigel’s character was portrayed.  Changes at the Company forced him to seek other employment and after a period of engagement as a massage therapist he went onto Securicor where he was based at the Grantley Adams International Airport.  At the time of his passing, he was employed at the UWI in their security arm. He was very excited at this, as he saw himself getting back into the books to finally further his studies. He did not know what the future hold, but I believe he knew who held the future.

Nigel also had his share of heartaches, none more painful than the death of his first child.  He was however a very private person.  One never knew his pains for he always had a smile or a wave to let you know all was well.

At primary school, we named ourselves after our superheroes and Pressie took the name of the VISION.  If any of you have read the Avengers comics you would know that that name was quite apt, the Vision was a stoic figure, never showing much outward emotions even in the face of great adversity!

How many of you knew that Pressie had a passion for writing poems (besides the girls whom he courted, of course).  He also wrote short stories and would file them away in old exercise books.  Many of us would never forget his great sense of humor especially when he got together with other jokers like Ricardo ‘Pa Willie’ Williams, Felix and Bandy, they would crack some of the worst and corniest jokes known to man and laugh their bellies full!! One of his last e-mails that he sent out on the Monday night, when it is believed that he died,  was of course……a joke.

He really was full of life!!

The Prescott household will remember fondly….or not so fondly when a large number of hungry teens would swarm their house on Saturdays or vacation devouring anything in sight led by Pressie, of course.  His mother took it all in stride as she would always cook and bake for us. We became members of the family. I am sure Nicky and Ann could attest to the late night sessions eating, watching movies, eating, arguing, eating or just frying chips and eating.

Pressie held strong views and stuck to his guns don’t matter what.  He was forthright but never disrespected anyone.  He would say what he had to say and still come and give you a playful slap, or ‘skin teet’….that was the MAN Pressie.

Nigel: the musician, the poet, the short story writer, the romantic, the soldier, the comedian, a friend.

He is survived by his son Scott Lee, parents; Angie and William, brother, William (Nicky), sister, Ann, and his nephew Darwin and nieces Christie, Melanie and Nikita.

MAY HE REST IN PEACE

AN APPRECIATION OF THE LIFE OF

NIGEL WINGROVE PRESCOTT

 By

Derek  L. Clarke

“And Jonathan had David reaffirm this oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.”

1 Samuel 20:17

Nigel Wingrove Prescott was born on the 19th December 1965, the youngest of three children of Angela Prescott.

After leaving Combermere school he worked for a Bridgetown firm for a short time, before he joined Intel Corporation.  When that company closed he was employed by the Barbados Mutual Life Insurance Company until their amalgamation with Life of Barbados, which is now known as Sagicor Life Inc.

Due to downsizing by this company Nigel was unfortunately forced to find other employment.  After a period of engagement as an athletic therapist in a joint venture with his older brother, he joined the ranks of the Security Department at Grantley Adams International Airport until his untimely death.

I first got to know Nigel in September 1978 when we were both students of Combermere School, and we joined the school Cadets under the command of then Lt. Deighton Maynard.  We became inseparable friends from that time, and pursued our school life and other activities together.  In this closely knit environment we formed a close bond with other members of our age group, namely, Jeffrey Forde and the late Carlisle Felicien.

We all decided that we would join the Cadet Band, and shortly after we were assigned similar band instruments, namely the cornet, and became known as the “Cornet Quartet”.

The Combermere School Cadet Band established itself as the premier para-military band in the island, and was in constant demand to display their talents at various musical functions. The “Cornet Quartet” became an important part of these presentations.

Nigel continued to pursue his love of music when he and I were approached by the late Lt. Col. Lawrence Quintyne to join the Barbados Regiment to assist in the formation of the Regimental Band, consisting of former members of the School Cadet Band.

Nigel became such an important part of my family that my parents would hesitate to grant permission for my participation in certain events unless Nigel was also involved (although I was 7 months older than he was).  My mother became the official barber for both of us as we prepared for our appearances at official Cadet Band functions.

Nigel was a true and dedicated friend, full of life, and had a passion for writing poetry and for the finer things of life.  He never strayed from his religious and personal convictions and always had a propensity for learning and experiencing new pursuits.

In extending my condolences and love to his family, I am sure he will be greatly missed, especially by his young son, Scott Lee Prescott.

I did love him like a brother and I like everyone who knew him, I too will surely miss him.

MAY HE REST IN PEACE
